AN HOLISTIC therapist has been banned from a Tewkesbury church.
Amy Dyer, who works at Body2Soul, in Nelson Street, says she was told not to attend a pampering evening at Holy Trinity Church, in Oldbury Road, because of ’spirituality’ reasons.
Amy, who uses reflexology, Indian head massage and Reiki, says she is being treated as though she practices witchcraft.
Yet three people who practice traditional beauty therapy have been welcomed with open arms.
Amy said: “All the other therapists could set up a stall but I couldn’t.

“Years ago if you did alternate things you were deemed to be a witch.
“But how is manipulating an 87-year-old’s shoulder so she can brush her hair wrong? All my treatments are about helping people. It’s an alternative to drugs and chemicals.”
The organisers of the Pink and Fluffy indulgence evening said they were told by the church not to allow Reiki, Indian head massage, aromatherapy or reflexology.
Amy said: “I phoned up the Reverend hoping he would make an exception. He said the evening was to put something back into the community, to which I replied I could be of great value with the treatments I do. But he said because of the spiritual practices of those treatments, I couldn’t do them.”
The holistic approach to health takes into account the whole patient rather than just focusing on the symptom or the part with the problem.
Most holistic therapists believe the body has a vital force that protects the body from disease and allows it to heal.
Vicar of Holy Trinity Church, the Rev Stephen Walker, said the decision to exclude holistic therapies was made without consulting the church council.
However he said the church did have concerns about the spiritual elements of some of the therapies.
He said: “There are some concerns about these and where they originate from, and what they are tapping into.”
“We’ve not had a discussion on this or formulated a policy but it would be highly likely Reiki would not be allowed.
“It concentrates healing through a particular spiritual channel. I don’t know what that spiritual channel is.
“It’s not a public market place, it’s a private event.”
The event, which was due to be held on October 17, has now been postponed.
